Dot Dash (Avant Garde)

Dot Dash is a post-punk pop band from Washington D.C. comprised of former members of Julie Ocean, Minor Threat, and Government Issue. Over five albums, Dot Dash has melded poppy melodies with an energetic instrumental attack that has drawn comparisons to The Jam, The Replacements, and The Buzzcocks, among others.  Their latest album is called 'Searchlights' and was released by Canadian indie label The Beautiful Music.

WASHINGTON POST: “Everything we've ever read about Dot Dash plays up the group's collective resume: Singer/guitarist Terry Banks was in St. Christopher and the Saturday People before teaming up with bassist Hunter Bennett in acclaimed indie-rock band Julie Ocean; guitarist Steve Hansgen played bass for hardcore legends Minor Threat and Government Issue, and then the mod group Modest Proposal; drummer Danny Ingram co-founded harDCore band Youth Brigade. Very impressive. But we're more interested in the music, a retro cocktail that recalls the yearning indie-pop of Sarah Records; the '80s neo-Byrds jangle of R.E.M., Orange Juice and other seminal college radio artists, and the tight, throbbing basslines and slashing guitars that evoke the Jam and the Clash."

Thee Psychedelicatessen: “a mix of punky Power Pop and a cool Big Star vibe, and produced by the legendary Mitch Easter, Dot Dash is very much in the vein of bands like Thin White Rope, The Replacements, The dB's, and Eleventh Dream Day. Album opener ‘The Winter of Discontent’ is a taught, melodic, sharp, jangly Power Pop tune and like the rest of the songs on the album it’s jam packed with hooks. A cool album you will dig if you like the wave of 60s-influenced/inspired American guitar bands that burnt brightly for a while in the mid 80s."

Strawberry Tongue Music: "Dot Dash, an energetic blend of post punk and powerpop with powerful driving melodies… The Beatles, The Clash, strong pop sensibilities... + a handful of albums on Canadian label The Beautiful Music."
